Wise Guys

Wise Guys is a self-responsibility program for males, ages 10-15. The program is designed to prevent adolescent pregnancy by teaching young men self-responsibility, primarily in the area of sexual development. Topics covered include:

  • Self-esteem
  • Communication
  • Sexuality
  • Dating violence
  • Abstinence
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Goal-setting
  • Decision-making
  • Parenthood

National studies have indicated that males initiate sex most often, however, most pregnancy prevention programs target females. By emphasizing the importance of preparing for the future, Wise Guys encourages young men to not get "caught up" in the trials or joys of today, but to plan for tomorrow.

The program is free of charge to participants and conducted by trained, adult facilitators. Wise Guys can be implemented virtually any place young men gather to learn and grow with the guidance of trusted adults. Program participants learn and develop skills from an array of experiences that include:

  • Discussions
  • Audio-visuals
  • Role playing
  • Structured and semi-structured activities
  • Brainstorming
  • Lectures

Ideally, the program is held weekly and consists of eight to ten, one-hour sessions. However the curriculum is flexible and can be modified to fit the scheduling needs of the partnering organization.
